Your complete angling set-up is built on a good fishing rod. Quality is important, but so is choosing the proper rod. How can you pick a fishing rod that's right for you out of the myriad varieties available?

Length of Fishing Rods

One of the first considerations when selecting a new rod is length. Rods come in a variety of lengths, from 4 to 14 feet, and range from strong close-quarter fishing rods to lengthy casting poles! How far you can cast is significantly impacted by rod length. Longer rods often allow for longer casts but are far more difficult to handle. Conversely, shorter rods provide you with much greater control but have a much less range of motion for the line.

Materials of Fishing Rods

Fishing rods are composed of composite, graphite, or fiberglass (a mixture of the two). Knowing which rod material to use will have a significant impact on your ability to catch fish because rod materials have a significant impact on performance.

Rod Power

The ability of a rod to bear pressure is a factor closely related to rod action. As you would have guessed, bigger fish require heavier rods, while smaller fish prefer lighter ones.

You should use heavier lines with heavier rods and lighter lines with lighter rods, following the same rationale. Although there is some room for error here, you should normally abide by the markings that are etched onto the rod blank. If the rod is excessively hefty, the line could break. The same could happen to the rod if the line is too heavy.

Typically, rod strengths range from Ultra Light to Light to Medium to Medium Heavy to Heavy to Ultra Heavy. A heavy offshore rod and a heavy Bass rod are two whole different things, so keep that in mind. One might have a 25 lb line rating, whereas the other might have an 80 lb line rating.
